PrEP Info

What is PrEP?

PrEP is a pill you can take to protect yourself from HIV. When used as directed, PrEP has been shown to be highly effective at reducing the risk of contracting HIV - up to 99% in some cases

-- If you don’t have HIV, taking PrEP every day can lower your chances of getting HIV from sex. PrEP can stop HIV from taking hold and spreading throughout your body.

You may benefit from PrEP if you:

  • have a sexual partner who’s at risk of HIV or is HIV-positive
  • do not know a partner’s HIV status
  • have multiple sexual partners
  • have sex without condoms or other barrier methods
  • use intravenous drugs

How effective is PrEP at preventing HIV?

It’s important to remember that PrEP pills aren’t effective right away. You need to take them daily for:

  • at least 7 days for maximum protection during receptive anal sex
  • at least 21 days for maximum protection during receptive vaginal sex
